I was unfortunately in the Iraq war in 2003 but with British forces.
I remember the build up, No one was interested in going to Iraq.
When the commanding officer got our Regiment in the mess/cook house to brief us all before Christmas breakup to tell us all that we're going we could read him like a book.
Officers (high ranking) aren't supposed to show any signs of disapproval to decisions from higher above but you could tell he wasn't happy and he struggled to to convey the moral boosting enthusiasm to get ready for us.
